Review: Expiration

I will be writing an in-depth review for the upcoming issue of The Film Journal, so I won't be writing much here, except to say that we may have the first major work of the Student-DV Film New Wave. Gavin Heffernan's supremely accomplished film is the stuff we dream about as critics...a rich, bountiful film filled to the brim with popping ideas and a sensual visual palette.

Heffernan has certainly crafted the most ambitious student film that I've seen in years. Far removed from the flash-in-the-pan, frenetic, MTV quick cut style of nearly every film made by young filmmakers, Heffernan's patient style suggests Godard and Tsai, more than Tarantino and Smith...thank God.

Expiration is the sort of film that truly shows us what's possible with DV features. Like last year's Charlotte Sometimes, we have a film that wonderfully, refreshingly, pushes the medium forward. Heffernan is to be commended, as well as thanked.
