Brief thoughts on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindAbsolute perfection. This is the most sublimely comic and achingly real love story I've seen in a very long time (it's actually sort of a hybrid of Soderbergh's Solaris, Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love and Nick Cassavetes' She's So Lovely [a film I feel is devastatingly underrated]). Carrey gives the finest comic performance since Peter Sellers...and probably the most bittersweet since the days of Chaplin and Keaton...he's that good here. It's a performance for the ages. I've always been a pretty big fan of Serious Jim (The Cable Guy, Man on the Moon, and especially The Truman Show)...this trumps them all. Of course he won't get the Oscar he deserves. Kate Winslet gives a breathtaking performance the supporting cast is spot-on. Deadly funny and/or heartbreaking turns by Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, David Cross, Tom Wilkinson and, especially, Kirsten Dunst. Gondry has made a revelatory film...I was really just sort of speechless when it ended. Far and away the best film of the year. Full review
